Cyber security researchers have issued a new warning to Android users. It was stated that a malware called Chameleon targets banking applications. According to the report, it has the ability to control the device thanks to two critical features.
What is the Chameleon virus for Android?
Chameleon, the malware that steals users’ financial information, is now much more powerful, according to security researchers at ThreatFabric. It has gained two important new features that significantly increase the risks for Android users.
The first worrying feature is that the malware has mastered the device-hijacking scam. The virus asks Android devices to enable the accessibility services permission. Once this permission is granted, the malware gains uncontrolled access without the device owner’s knowledge.
Even more worrying, Chameleon can disable fingerprint or face unlocking. By changing the authentication mechanism, the malware replaces the phone password with a PIN code. With this password, it can unlock the device at will.
Cybersecurity experts say the new techniques make Chameleon much more dangerous and difficult to detect. It can access banking, payment and other financial information, they warned.
The malware is currently targeting users in Europe. It was stated that it spread through various forums, WhatsApp and Telegram groups. For this reason, we recommend that you do not download applications from official stores such as the Google Play Store.
